The Future of NYC Transportation System, a Conversation with Dick Ravitch

Join YPT-NYC on June 9th at 12:30PM for a conversation with Dick Ravitch, former Chairman and CEO of the MTA from 1979 – 1983.

Dick Ravitch has earned a reputation for his political savvy, business skill, and commitment to social responsibility throughout his decades-long career in New York City and State governments. He is renowned for his work in the public sector to fix numerous fiscal crises.

He was appointed Lieutenant Governor from 2009-2010, shortly after the housing bubble burst in 2008, which stunted the country’s economy. However, our community may know him best for his work solving the MTA’s fiscal crises as Chairman and CEO of the MTA from 1979 to 1983. While overseeing MTA operations and the capital program, Ravitch reorganized the MTA to improve its management (including establishing Metro-North Railroad), he developed a long-term capital plan for systemwide rehabilitation, and he designed a financing plan for such improvements. Ravitch successfully transformed the MTA at a time when the transit system was struggling with disinvestment and disrepair.

With the MTA currently undergoing another transformation, experiencing a global pandemic, and grappling with fiscal crises at every level of government in America, there are parallel challenges today. He remains an outspoken public proponent of investing in our cities, infrastructure and public sector workforce in the wake of the pandemic. Please join us for a conversation with Dick Ravitch to learn valuable lessons from his experience and his perspective on the future of the transportation system.
